Southern Dallas Food Deserts:
Food insecurity is a prevalent and consistent issue in southern Dallas. Food insecurity is ​"the disruption of food intake or eating patterns because of a lack of money and other resources." Food insecure areas are usually called "food deserts," low-income places where a large portion of residents have low access to supermarkets, grocery stores, or fresh produce. Southern Dallas consists of about 25-35 USDA-recognized food deserts.

Reliable access to fresh, healthy food is a huge problem in our community. Thus, it is the initiative of Community Basket Mobile Farmers Market to help provide a stable, easy-to-access source of healthy eating and living.
We Offer a Solution:
Food insecurity is a complex issue based on multiple factors, such as low income, health disparities, and systemic discrimination, that cannot be easily erased. However, we at Community Basket offer one practical solution to help alleviate food insecurity in southern Dallas:

A combination of easy-to-access healthy foods, nutrition and healthy lifestyle education services, experiential learning programs, and evidence-based research. Together with our local partners and sponsors, we hope to move the needle toward food security in southern Dallas.
